Why
Mozilla Thunderbird?
Thunderbird is an open-source development built by the same developers of
the popular Firefox browser. Just like Outlook Express, Thunderbird is full-featured
email client with lots of perks under its belts. Features like real-time search,
adaptive
junk
mail filtering, anti-phishing protection, and image privacy protection
have convinced many
users to switch.
As
a Thunderbird user, the most impressive feature by
far is the adaptive spam filters. It works in conjunction
with Spam Assassin to detect and tag suspected spams
and automatically move to the Junk folder. Better
yet, any untagged spams coming into your inbox can
be manually marked as Junk by clicking on to the
"Junk Can" icon. Its adaptive filters will
then remember the originating email address and/or
the respective
domain name and will add this new data to the anti-spam
algorithms.
After 6 months of training to my filter system,
I have seen a satisfactory decrease in junk mail
in my
inbox.
More
powerful features than Outlook Express:
Just like Windows LiveMail or Gmail, Thunderbird,
by default, does not display any images in the HTML
emails. It prevents virus attacks or spammer's
email receipt conversation tracking. Another interesting
feature is its anti-phishing filter. HTML emails with
outgoing links that does not correspond to the URL
displayed on the email will be marked as "Thunderbird thinks this email
is a scam." I enjoy such features as it has prevented me
from being scammed by various online banking spoofing
and phishing (or hameçonnage in french) scams.
This newly found feature is a true gem - "View: Not
Junk". It can be easily set up that
your
Inbox
is
only displaying
emails that are not marked as Junk. Works in conjunction
with the anti-spam filters,
my Inbox
can soon declare "I got no spam",
as famously quoted by John C. Dvorak on TwIT.
For
more information:
Thunderbird
is available on Windows, OS X (both Intel/PowerPC
based), and Linux and in 35 different languages.
Download
Mozilla
Thunderbird. Try out Thunderbird and see for
yourself. If your email account has IMAP settings, you
can have both Outlook Express and Thunderbird coexist
and evaluate its anti-spam filters.
